On a dark night of September 2, 2010, the Maurya Express was speeding through a forest route from Ranchi to Gorakhpur. Most passengers were asleep when suddenly, without warning, nearly 40 armed robbers stormed into the train. Carrying deadly weapons, they spread fear throughout the compartment. Terrified passengers were threatened, robbed of money, jewelry, and valuables. Fear silenced everyone.
Then the gang targeted an 18-year-old girl, harassing her in front of her helpless parents. Though the parents cried and begged for mercy, no one dared to step forward. Everyone was afraid.
But in that moment of fear, one man stood up.
It was Bishnu Shrestha, a retired soldier from the Indian Army’s Gorkha Regiment. Armed only with his traditional khukuri knife, he courageously stepped into the middle of nearly 40 criminals.
What followed seemed like a scene from a movie — except this was real.
For nearly 20 minutes, he fought fearlessly to protect innocent people. His bravery shocked the attackers. Several were injured, and the gang eventually fled, realizing they were facing not an ordinary man, but someone with extraordinary courage. Though seriously injured during the struggle, he succeeded in protecting the young girl from harm.
Later, when the girl’s family offered him a large reward as gratitude, he politely refused.
He reportedly said:
“As a soldier, fighting enemies is my duty. But what I did on that train was simply my responsibility as a human being.”
A Lesson for Today’s Generation
This story is not just about bravery. It is about responsibility.
Today, many people stay silent when they witness bullying, harassment, injustice, or wrongdoing. Fear, social pressure, or the mindset of “someone else will help” often keeps people from acting. But society becomes safer only when ordinary people choose not to remain silent.
- Being against injustice does not always mean physical fighting. It means:
- Speaking up when someone is being mistreated
- Supporting victims instead of ignoring them
- Standing for truth even when it is uncomfortable
- Refusing to normalize wrongdoing
The current generation has intelligence, education, and powerful voices. What society needs now is the courage to use them for what is right
One brave person can stop injustice. One voice can inspire many.
